How to Caucus

Caucus for Coleman - Save the Date Feb 25th

Precinct caucuses are open to the public and the Republican Party of Minnesota depends on your involvement!

Who can attend a precinct caucus?
In order to vote, offer resolutions, or become a delegate, you must:

What happens at a caucus?

  1. Elect Precinct Officers who work to organize political activities in the precinct.
This could include maintaining contact lists, convening political meetings and helping with campaign efforts.
  2. Discuss issues and ideas for the party to support.
Anyone may bring resolutions, which are ideas or proposed changes to the Party Platform or Constitution to be discussed and voted on.
  3. Vote for the person you want the Party to support for President.
This year’s straw poll is a binding vote that will influence how many delegates each candidate receives. So it is important you attend – each vote counts!
  4. Elect Delegates to represent your precinct at upcoming political conventions.
On March 14th, Carver County Republicans will hold a convention where candidates for state legislative offices will be chosen.

Now that I know what Precinct Caucus is, what do I do on Tuesday, February 25th?

  1. First, you’ll need to know where to go to attend caucus. Look up your precinct on the State of MN GIS website HERE.
  2. to find your caucus location, or check the list at the bottom of this page.

Note that this might not be the same as your polling place listed on the Secretary of State website. Locations are generally at schools, government buildings or places of worship. Make note of what Precinct you are in (i.e. Waconia W-2) and bring it with you to Caucus!

  3. When you arrive at your caucus location on February 25th at 6:00 PM, first go to the registration/check-in table.
At the registration table, you will be given your Precinct Room location and directed to a central location where all attendees will gather prior to meeting in Precinct Rooms. The central meeting area is where attendees will be addressed by party leaders and candidates running for office or their representatives.
  4. After the body has been addressed as a whole, attendees will break out into their Precinct Rooms.
  5. Here’s the order of what will take place once in the Precinct Rooms:
    • A Convener will ask the attendees to elect a Secretary to record the proceedings of the evening.
    • Additional Precinct Leaders will be elected such as Chair, Deputy Chair, etc.
    • Discussion of policy and resolutions to include in the Republican platform.
    • Attendees will vote in the Presidential Preference Poll.
    • Conveners will ask for nominations of those who want to be Delegates. You can nominate yourself to be a Delegate.
    • Names of those wishing to be elected a delegate are written on a board.
    • Voting takes places by secret ballot.

The Convener will write down the names of the elected Delegates on the board starting with the Delegate who received the most votes and then descending in vote total from there.
If you have been elected a Delegate, congratulations! You are now eligible to vote for who will be Senate District 47’s candidates on March 14th!
