The very first piece of legislation authored by Senator Coleman in the Senate and signed into law was a bill requiring the Pentagon to pay our troops’ travel expenses when they head home from abroad for rest and relaxation. That bill set the stage for Senator Coleman’s strong work honoring the sacrifices of our soldiers and veterans throughout his time on the Senate floor.
Senator Coleman has been a leader in increasing Pell Grants, and works to reduce the cost of college
Senator Coleman has been a leading voice in Washington to increase Pell Grants and has worked across party lines to fight for programs that will help reduce the cost of college. He’s led bi-partisan initiatives to raise the maximum Pell Grants and supported successful legislation that will raise the maximum grant to $5,400 within 5 years. In addition, Senator Coleman introduced legislation to reduce the cost of college textbooks, and has supported substantial increases to the Perkins Loan, and TRIO programs.

Senator Coleman is working hard and getting things done for our veterans and military personnel
Since he took office in 2003, federal funding for veterans programs has increased 67%. During this time period, funding for veterans has increased 67% from $52.38 billion in Fiscal Year 2002 to $87.5 billion in Fiscal Year 2008. Senator Coleman has voted 29 times to increase funding for veterans programs, and has rejected false funding promises that only served to increase the burden on taxpayers, including our veterans, and to raise the federal debt on the shoulders of our honored veterans.
