Sportsmen
Norm Coleman has worked hard on behalf of sportsmen and women across this state to preserve the natural resources and rights that they hold dear. As a member of the Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus, some of Norm’s proudest accomplishments have centered on helping hunters and fishermen protect their way of life, while ensuring that they’re able to pass their outdoor tradition on to future generations.
A believer in the notion that we should leave our fields and waterways better than how we found them, Norm Coleman has earned praise for his unwavering support of conservation of our natural resources. The conservation title of the new Farm Bill contains the largest conservation investment in history, and includes key provisions that increase funding for programs that protect and preserve our lakes, rivers, fields and woodlands. One such provision is the Conservation Stewardship Program, which works with landowners to encourage the preservation of our nation’s critical habitat, along with Open Fields – legislation Coleman fought for to allow hunters more voluntary access to private lands.
Norm has worked to protect fish populations by pushing aggressive measures to protect our waterways from invasive species such as the Asian carp. He is also the co-founder of the Senate Mississippi River Task Force, which has worked to restore critical habitat along the Mississippi, and he successfully secured authorization for an Asian Carp barrier on the Mississippi River as part of the Water Resources Development Act.
Norm is also the lead Senate sponsor of the Wetlands Loan Act, which would accelerate the conservation of wetlands habitat that is vital to the future of waterfowl. He is also a key supporter of legislation to strengthen and protect the future of the Great Lakes ecosystem.
Norm has been a proud advocate of our Second Amendment rights throughout his time in office. As a result, groups such as the National Rifle Association have shown their appreciation by consistently giving him high approval ratings throughout his career in the U.S. Senate. Norm is a strong supporter of the recent Supreme Court decision to overturn the Washington, D.C. handgun ban, one of the most significant Second Amendment rulings in our history that reaffirmed the Constitutional right of Americans to keep and bear arms.
As someone who finds fishing at his northern Minnesota cabin one of the best ways to relax, Norm is and will remain fully committed to ensuring future generations are able to hunt, fish and simply enjoy all that Minnesota’s great outdoors have to offer for years to come.
