SENATOR NORM COLEMAN RE-ELECTED TO SECOND TERM

ST. PAUL - Coleman for Senate Campaign Manager Cullen Sheehan released the following statement early this morning regarding Senator Norm Coleman's re-election to the United States Senate by the people of Minnesota:

"The Senator is thrilled and humbled to be given the opportunity to serve the people of Minnesota for another six years. Today is a time for us to come together as a state and a nation. There is much work to be done, and the Senator is ready to roll-up his sleeves and bring people together to get it done."”

The recount has not started and there is no official winner.
Try to show more class during the recount process than you did during the campaign.
Minnesotans expect more from their candidates.

Good job

Good job, Coleman team.

Recount no Re-election

Only 571 votes difference means a recount not reelection.

As a former Senator Coleman intern, and 22 year old recent college grad living in Minneapolis, I am so happy to hear that Norm has been re-elected. The people of Minnesota stood up and voted for the right person. I am excited to see what Senator Coleman has in store for the next 6 years. Norm may not be a Minnesotan by birth, but he truly is a Minnesotan by ideals and heart. Way to go Senator Coleman.

Not until the last vote is counted...

Please do not insult our democratic process by attempting to strong arm Franken into concession before a recount. This margin is too close and our democractic tradition would be betrayed not to insure accuracy.

Victory?!?

with less than 500 vote margin (.01%) the recount may make you eat those words!! What about the irregularities!!!

By: TC

Hey, now...

This seems a bit premature. Minnesota election law requires recount because of the incredibly narrow margin of Senator Coleman's victory. Everything isn't necessarily exactly accurate in the hurry of election day. Moreover, hasn't there been talk of some absentee and provisional ballots that have yet to be counted?

MOM/GrandMOM

Minnesota law calls for a recount, as an elected official YOU Senator Coleman should respect that law.

There were 1.2 million votes for you, but over 1.8 million votes against you.

Al Franken has only 439 votes less as of the count this morning 11-06-08.

How DARE you say YOU are the WINNER on your Website. Remove that if and when you are recounted to be the winner.

I'm a Grandma of 2 girls and 2 boys and a mother of 4 sons. NO ONE should declare any race over until the REPLAY SAYS IT IS just like in any sport.

By: Bernadine

Hold your horses!

It's not over 'til it's over. And this one is definitely not over. Like the ref at a football game, "after further review..........."

By: Steve G.

close race

you were an okay senator at best. if you win good for you. if you lose good for you. the law demands a recount so good for the electorate. quit being the opportunist you have been for six years with the Victory speech. with six years to serve the people you should have positioned yourself to win in a landslide, you obviously did not.

By: bobby

Time to Pass the hat

$0.017 per person for the recount. Just tell me where to send my two cents.
say, how much did your press conference to deride the 'waste' of money in a recount cost.
YOU ARE POMPOUS JERK!

By: Greg
If Al was in the lead with this margin he would let the recount happen before declaring himself victor. Only someone who doesn't care about the electorate would not care if he won with an accurate count of their votes as long as he won. You'd better wash your foot because you could very well be tasting it in a month.

By: Joe

"Victory!!" Errrr, Not Really

336 vote difference. This is going to be a close one with 6K or so rejected ballots to be reviewed and credited to one candidate or the other. I loved the part where, notwithstanding the razor thin margin after the initial tally, you begged Al to just please let you be the winner, Norm. That was funny.

McCain said on Tuesday morning that he was confident that he was going to win. I guess that some GOPers have problems with premature celebrations. I thank GOD that there is an election recount law on the books.

Checking the Secretary of State's web site the lead is down to 236. That's alot of movement before the recount has even taken place.

It doesn't appear Norm knocked on wood after he announced his victory.

This could have an even better ending then I expected.

Congratulations on a victory fairly won. It was a great privilege to meet you and participate in some of the activities of the campaign.

Norm, please do yourself, your family and the good citizens of Minnesota a favor and step off. You will be investigated by the Senate and indicted for ethics violations. Please don't let our State turn into another Alaska.

By: Bobby

PLEASE

I continue to hope and PRAY that the election holds up as is. I'm at a loss how Al continues to find more votes for him every day - hmmmm, a DFL Secretary of State perhaps. Still trying to figure out what previous experience Al has that qualifies him for the senate position.

By: Bev

respect for the law

Dear Senator Coleman:

As a sitting U.S. Senator, one would like to think that you subscribe to the proposition that we are a nation of laws, not men.

Surely, you are aware of the Minnesota law regarding the application of recounts in general elections. No one knows with certainty at this point who actually one this election. Not you, not me, not anyone!

Better then that you should let the law run its course. If you are eventually adjudged the winner by a true count of the electorate, no one will begrudge you your victory. Same goes for your opponent.

This last election was won by Mr. Obama because, in my judgement, he best appealed to the larger swath of independent-minded voters. By taking a magnanimous appoach to you opponent's claims, as I hope he would do for you, and by letting the law prevail, you can only enhance your own claim to electoral legitimacy.

By: martin goldstein
I'm amazed by your insolence in declaring victory, when you're leading by 336 votes now with the continuing recount. Mind explaining about your wife receiving 75,000 dollars?

By: Michael

Don't count your chickens...

...Before they're hatched. A recount is only fair considering the razor-thin difference in votes. That "VICTORY" splash page may be a tad embarrassing by the end of the month.

By: Steven Birch

The Hmong Votes

As an independent/split ticket voter I think a recount is respectable. However, if Coleman does end up the victor, the difference make came down to the Hmong votes. Coleman has historically and currently been more involved in the Hmong community than Franken. With a margin of victory of less than 500 or whatever the latest update is, there is no way anyone can deny that the Hmong votes didn't matter. I applaud Coleman's effort in reaching out to the Hmong community. Good luck in the next six years.

Way to go Norm!

A little premature Norm?

I voted for you, but you call the game before the buzzer goes off.

It makes us all look silly.

By: Six Pack Joe
Norm,

Your early declaration victory is foolish.

I suggest:

1. Embrace the recount.
2. Raise funds for the recount.
3. Prove to Minnesotans you respect the laws and our democracy of every vote counts.

These three things will show Minnesotans you are NOT the typical politician many folks are saying you are.

By: Mark Mattington

The recount continues. There is no winner until it is complete.

By:

Creative Director

Don't jump the gun Norm. If I were you, I would try to seem as above the board as possible and take down that declaration of victory. Even if you do win after the recount, it makes you seem very petty that you are trying to shut down the recount by telling Franken to concede.

I hope Norm is fighting for every vote to be counted. Not like the Mugabe tactics uses by Bush in 2000.

Are you a law abiding Senator?

I thought there is a mandatory recount and no winner has been declared. Do you believe in the rule of law?

By: Joel Schaffer

Seriously?

Can you wait until you've been DECLARED the winner before congratulating yourself? At last count, the difference was less than 250 votes. With a couple million being cast, there is no clear winner at this point. Wait until the recount is over.

Your victory message is an affront to the voters of Minnesota.

By: Peggy
Norm, please respect our democracy and let the legal process continue, without your whining. By the way, 58% of Minnesotans voted AGAINST you, so I hardly think you have reason to crow.

By: Patrick

We saw this in WA

Mission Accomplished eh? That's what Dino Rossi said 4 years ago (whilst running for gov of WA state) when he appeared to be ahead by 200 or so votes out of millions. The recount proved him wrong. He bitched and cried every step of the way just as you are. Man up and support democracy.

By: Jon

Minnesota Law

Minnesota law requires a recount. It is not up to you it's a legal right of the citizens. You had six years to prove yourself, if you had done your job you would have won in a landslide. You need to wake up and smell the coffee. It's your own fault it is so close.

Prayers for Norm

We are certain that they will try to steal it from Norm so we are continuing our prayers. Go get 'em, Norm.

By: ed
Note that the Normie supporters are ignoring the issues of recount and fair democracy, and just declaring victory and right-ness. Just like they do with political issues.

"nope. we're just right. bible says so. or at least I believe that the bible says so. or my preacher told me to believe that the bible says so. oh, thats a mistake? well, I'm still right, uhh just because."

please people, use your brains and your hearts and be fair and be nice to all people.

By: Citizen Voter

Hold yer horses, Norm

NOPE. Not yet. Hopefully not at all. Don't declare the obvious non-truth. you are NOT at this time the winner. Dont say so, or you are lying and misleading.
A politician should never do that, right?

Serious Drama

I got a little confused myself.
There is never any shortage of drama with Minnesota politics.
Minnesotans have already elected one wrestler, Franken is hoping to make it #2. Whoever wins, I hope the twin cities get a candidate that takes there office and mandate seriously.

Norm is the Winner!

Congratulations, Norm! I am sure you have won and it is due to the majority of Minnesotans voting for you. It is unfortunate Mr. Franken is as poor a loser as he would have been a Senator for Minnesota.

By: MN Indepen

Seriously?

What a jerk. Claiming victory when even Fox News hasn't called this one for him? Get a grip...

By: Come again?
Your lead is down to 206 and dropping fast.

Thank You!

Good Luck Norm! I hope this holds true. I don't like the news of Al taking the lead today. He really is not fit for office. What a joke it would be to have him rep MN.

Al Franken is winning

So how did that work out for you, Norm? Now that Al Franken is ahead and looking almost certain to win, this message is really looking stupid, huh?

By: Esben
Concede, Normie.

Letter to Senator Coleman,

I am greatly disappointed in your decision to file a lawsuit to stop the confirmation of Al Franken to the Senate representing Minnesota. I have voted for you in the past, but I can’t say that I would again, due to your recent behavior.

The day after the election you said that Mr. Franken should simply bow out and consider you the winner of the election and save the taxpayers money.

Now that the tide has turned, and Mr. Franken won by a higher margin that your original vote total, you have decided to file a lawsuit and cost the taxpayers even more money. At first you argued to have the wrongfully rejected write in ballots counted, and then after you lost votes you changed your mind and wanted to contest their validity, shame on you!

This seems like a double standard to me and does nothing for your image. I’m not sure I want someone so desperate to represent our state. It makes one think that perhaps you owe too many favors that have to be repaid.

Please do what’s right for the country and simply acknowledge Mr. Franken to his rightfully won senate seat.

Sincerely,

Joan B

By: Joan B
Think you are just a bit confused about being re elected. You lost Norm, don't remain in denial like the past Sen. Stevens! You lost, be a man and accept the results.
