Constitution Wins: Second Amendment Rights Protected
Today, the Supreme Court protected a key constitutional right in overturning a Washington, D.C. law that had previously banned individual handgun ownership in the city for over 30 years.
As a strong supporter of our Second Amendment rights, I applaud this decision protecting one of the fundamental rights put forth by our Founding Fathers. Whether you are a sportsman or sportswoman who enjoys spending time hunting, or a homeowner who wants to protect your family and property, this is one of the most significant Second Amendment rulings in our nation’s history.
The case before the Supreme Court centered on a question that opponents of gun rights have raised for years in an attempt to whittle away at our Second Amendment rights – whether or not individuals have the right to own firearms for their own protection. In today’s decision, the court clearly ruled that individuals have the right to own firearms, therefore making it unconstitutional for local officials to simply prohibit the large majority of Washington, D.C. residents from owning handguns.
This ruling again shows the importance of confirming judges who will strictly interpret the Constitution, rather than trying to legislate from the bench. Our Founding Fathers did not create our Constitution to merely be a suggestion or guideline that could be easily changed to suit the political whims of individual judges, courts or legislators.
Today’s ruling sends an unmistakable message that one of our nation’s most important freedoms, as set forth in the Constitution, is upheld for all Americans.
In Minnesota, our heritage is inextricably linked to hunting and the outdoors, individual freedoms and the right to protect ourselves and our families. We cherish these freedoms and today we can all celebrate the protection of those freedoms.
