Minnesota GOP unanimously backs Coleman Senate bid

The Republican Party of Minnesota endorsed Sen. Norm Coleman’s candidacy for the U.S. Senate in a resonant and resolute vote last week. A video compilation of Minnesotans Senator Coleman has helped during his time as Senator followed the endorsement announcement.

"Being a U.S. senator is not about being a celebrity, or slaying ideological dragons,” he later said. “As a Senator, I'm in the customer service business. Ninety-five percent of what I do is to help people. “

Senator Coleman addressed the convention after the video, laying out his bold, eight-point plan for improving the U.S. economy, strengthening national security and achieving energy independence.

“Let’s show Minnesota what we’re for, not what we’re against,” Senator Coleman said. “And we also need to be ready to say our problems are bigger than one party and be ready to work with everyone to find solutions.”

Coleman said that he has a tough race ahead but remained confident that with the support of Minnesota Republicans, he would be victorious in November.

What’s being said:
  • “Pledging to bring ‘people together to get things done,’ U.S. Sen. Norm Coleman on Friday accepted his party's thunderous endorsement for reelection with a speech that affirmed GOP values and encouraged the party to carry an optimistic message into this year's elections.”            (Patricia Lopez, “Coleman Calls on GOP to be Party of Hope and Toughness,” Minneapolis Star Tribune, May 30, 2008.)
  • “Coleman entered the convention hall to rousing applause from the delegates,”      (“Minnesota Republicans again endorse Coleman for U.S. Senate,” Rochester Post-Bulletin, May 30, 2008.)
  • “Coleman said he predicts a close, tough election race in the fall. His acceptance speech was a blunt assessment of where Republicans stand 157 days before the 2008 election.”          (Pat Kessler, “Incumbent Sen. Coleman wins GOP endorsement,” WCCO.com, May 30, 2008.)
  • “Coleman's longest and loudest applause came as he talked of the need to win the war, keep taxes down and ‘end our addiction to foreign oil.’” (Rachel E. Stassen-Berger,“In a single voice, state GOP backs Coleman,” St. Paul Pioneer Press, May 30, 2008.)
